Obstacles to Cure: Mercury
Part 4- Homeopathy & Detoxing Metals and Other Toxins
Welcome back! Today we continue on the topic of sustaining causes that prevent homeopathy from being able to reach a cure. I won’t be going over the foundational information regarding obstacles to cure again in this post, as that has been covered in-depth in the previous articles in this series. In case you missed them, here they are:
When Good Remedies Don’t Act (The Overview)
Part 1— Obstacles to cure: Radiation
Part 2— Obstacles to Cure: Spike Protein
Part 3— Obstacles to Cure: Drugs
So let’s dive right in. The topic today is mercury.
We could also go into aluminum, lead, cadmium and other metals, plus toxins such as glyphosate and flame retardants; however, the solutions I will share for detoxing mercury work for these as well— so don’t skip this article because you think mercury doesn’t apply to you. (And you might be surprised to find that you too have been exposed.)
Mercury is particularly important because it is extremely toxic, it doesn’t completely leave the body without help, and a great many people are walking around with a continual source in their bodies that they aren’t even aware might be having (major) health consequences.
I am struck by the fact that there is even a need to write this article. And, yet, it wasn’t that long ago that I, myself, was unconscious to the fact that a mouthful of mercury fillings was contributing to and even causing the majority of my health problems.
Just eight weeks ago I had six mercury amalgam fillings replaced. Although I don’t know the exact age I got my first filling, probably it was not long after I got my permanent teeth, with more to come in my teens. Since I am almost 50, I probably had some permanent source of mercury in my system for a good 40 years.
In retrospect, I can now track the timeline of many of my health conditions in relationship to the ‘silver’ amalgam fillings. And similar timelines stand out in many of the people I work with.
In addition to the fillings, when I was around 12 years old, I had an additional tetanus vaccine shot (in addition to the childhood vaccinations from 1975 which included DTP). At that time, the tetanus vaccines still had thimerosal, the mercury preservative, in them.
Looking back I can see that that was also a turning point in my health. Between the fillings, and the injection into an already sensitized system, within a couple of years I had acne on my forehead and had become increasingly aware that I never seemed to have the same kind of energy that my friends did. And so began the very gradual increase of new issues as the years went by.
‘Thiomersal, or thimerosal, also sold under the name merthiolate, is an organomercury compound. It is a well-established antiseptic and antifungal agent. It has been used as a preservative in vaccines, immunoglobulin preparations, skin test antigens, antivenins, ophthalmic and nasal products, and tattoo inks.’ — Wikipedia
(Note that the primary drug name has mers in it— mers, merc, merth are common clues to a mercury component in a drug name.)
But it wasn’t until my late thirties that my health started to fall apart. I was living in Argentina at the time, and gradually developed a host of mysterious conditions including; rosacea, oral dermatitis (a rash by the mouth), digestive issues, terrible burning and rawness of the genitals, weakness, fatigue (10 hours of sleep was never enough), itching all over like bugs crawling (formication)— the scalp was the worst, and seemingly random allergic reactions that resulted in massive hive outbreaks, as well as painful cysts (like Bartholin’s cysts), darkened and mottled patches on my skin, hair thinning, eyes yellowing, getting sick often, and restless legs and wicked calf cramps, to list just some of the major symptoms.
Since I was a teen I had also dealt with terrible menstrual cramps, PMS, excessive sweating that stained yellow, I was always cold, and had chronic anxiety as well. (Both my parents have dealt with rosacea most of their adult lives as well.)
I chased ‘causes’ for many, many years: Cutting out more and more foods, testing every vitamin and supplement, looking online at forums and then taking borax, drinking hydrogen peroxide drops in water, adding apple cider vinegar, trying whole crushed garlic cloves, and so on (many of you probably can relate!), until I was left eating a very restricted diet, feeling overall better, but definitely not cured.
(Fortunately, it was never in my mind to enter the medical machine, which of course could not provide cures for these issues and could lead to even more problems over time.)
When we moved back to the US, I began to drink detox smoothies regularly (shared below), and then gradually got into homeopathy, which brought me to around 90% better, although still needing to manage my health through diet and homeopathy.
The first time that I really sat down and read the entire entry for Mercurius Solublis in Nature’s Materia Medica, I thought, ‘Wow, this remedy is a 10 legged stool for me!’
(It was such a good fit. LOL. I didn’t even consider WHY it was such a good fit.)
Then Manfred Mueller brought mercury back into my awareness. It is one of the primary ‘Obstacles to Cure’ that he covers in his book, Extra Strength Homeopathy.
There had been a brief moment years earlier when I had considered mercury removal. However, the horror stories I read about terrible systemic reactions and aggravations put me off that I track and then I just forgot all about it. Out of sight, out of mind.
But safe mercury amalgam replacement is very doable nowadays. And there are plenty of holistic and biological dentists using ‘SMART’ methods for mercury filling removal.
If I was to choose one top bang-for-buck thing to do to maximize health improvements, I don’t think there could be a better choice than dealing with mercury fillings.
(And also root canals and cavitations, which deserve a whole separate article. I will also address homeopathy for teeth, and for fear of dental work, in that post.)
The amount of money most people spend on visits to doctors and health specialists, and even just on supplements each year— often with little improvement in health— could pay for a great deal of dental work that would provide actual solutions!
Mercury in the teeth is a primary issue, but there are other sources as well.
Much more on all of this below.
As I studied and integrated into my practice ‘The Mueller Method’ for clearing obstacles to cure, I began to revisit many client cases, specifically asking about mercury fillings and other potential sustaining causes of health problems.
This one data point can shed a lot of light on a case.
It turned out that one homeopathy client who had struggled with severe depression for much of his life had two mercury amalgam fillings. I suggested replacement and he got it done very quickly. Now, between detoxing to remove the stored mercury and homeopathy, he is lightening and feeling better month by month. I can see it clearly, and so can those who know him well.
Then there is another client who I have worked with for years (in this case in my psychotherapy practice). She would get suicidally depressed around her menses each month and struggled with depression and addiction all the time. Years ago we used some homeopathic remedies, and it helped a great deal, but not 100%. Later she developed shingles in her eye, which we also helped with homeopathy. Recently, I took a look in her mouth and she has two mercury fillings. I am encouraging her to get them replaced, as I am certain it will help her get past these chronic hurdles once and for all.
However, she doesn’t quite believe it yet. And many don’t. Most have been living with their issues so long it is hard to make the connection. And, hey, dentists are still using mercury. And the American Dental Association still claims there is no link between mercury and health problems.
Even for those who do believe me, there are many who absolutely dread dental work and do not want to deal with it. Let alone the cost.
But it is interesting to note that so far ALL my clients who deal with actual depression have either mercury fillings and/or root canals, in addition to having had the childhood vaccination schedule and/or flu shots.
I also have some older clients, in their 70s, 80s and even 90s, that I can see have the perfect picture of mercury-driven conditions, some rather extreme. But not one of them is interested in addressing their (many) silver fillings. One the one hand I get it, but on the other hand, if you are planning on living even another another 5 years, I would get rid of the mercury. Because over time it only gets worse.
I had low-grade issues for ~25 years or so before it exploded into real problems. (Did you know that 25 years is considered the life span of the average mercury filling? I didn’t!) And then at around 35 years in, I started to develop extreme neuralgia, problems with smell and taste, and other new issues. Imagine what happens after 50 or more years.
(And you don’t even have to imagine, because I am going to list out the conditions for you below!)
Since getting my mercury amalgam fillings replaced two months ago, and using gentle detox at home, many of my issues are falling away: Jaw tension and aches, clenching of my teeth, neuralgia and headaches, bad smells and tastes. For about four years I hadn’t been able to tolerate the smell of onions or garlic— even in the grocery store the bins they were repulsive to me— and that was instantly gone after the mercury replacement. And many other minor nagging issues shifted quickly as well. But the biggest shifts have been in my ENERGY, which is exponentially improving, and IRRITABILITY, which I’ve worked to manage forever, basically just vanished.
Mercury fillings are one issue and one way we get mercury in our system, but it’s not the only way. Yet mercury amalgams affect a huge portion of the population:
Mothers with mercury in their mouths also affects their babies, who are exposed for the first nine months of their lives in utero, which of course is during the most critical stages of development, and then through their breast milk.
In addition, most people born before 2010 have been injected (multiple times) with mercury by way of various vaccinations. (The authorities are only JUST NOW set to remove the last of the mercury from flu vaccines.)
So, while everyone is busy talking about viruses, there is a silent epidemic raging that we could call simply toxicity, or chronic poisoning. And while many blame genetics for ‘inherited conditions’ such as Alzheimers’, and ‘autoimmune’ for mysterious conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, few are talking about immediate and enduring exposures that could easily cause these conditions, as well as affect everyone in the same family. (The majority of parents who get fillings and vaccines also do the same for their offspring, unless they learned something along the way.)
And because many of these conditions that appear from toxicity are not contagious diseases, they do not have to be reported in the same way that infectious diseases do, and therefore the statistics that are maintained for many diseases, such as MS, are actually likely to be heavily underreported.
You will also discover below that there are still other ways we may be unknowingly exposed to mercury, such as contact lens solutions and eye drops.
Now it is education time. I have compiled a ton of data here for you. (And for me as well, to have all in one place a resource.) I couldn’t find anywhere that even attempted to be comprehensive about the conditions that mercury can cause. (It may exist, but I couldn’t find it.)
Even if you are already convinced, you may have loved ones who are not. So maybe some of this will help you to help them.
A few interesting notes from my research—
• Multiple Sclerosis doesn’t seem to exist without mercury intoxication. (Mercury creates lesions and ulcers— including on the myelin sheaths of the nerves.)
Check out this video that shows ‘How Mercury Affects The Brain’. (5 min video. Take note of the comment about the lesions which appear in both autism and Alzheimer’s).
• Alzheimers’s is indistinguishable from mercury toxicity.
• Dentists have two times the rate of glioblastoma (brain cancer) as the rest of the population. (And they have a very high occupational exposure to mercury.)
• It only takes a few atoms of mercury to create a birth defect, such as a cleft palate or lowered IQ.
"Dental amalgam that is not in the mouth is called waste amalgam. It's regarded by the Environmental Protection Agency as a toxic waste hazard."
— Dr. Robert Gammal
I highly recommend watching the documentary, Queksilber. The run time is only 53 minutes and it does a great job of breaking down the issues and realities of mercury fillings in an interesting and informative video.
Why does the American Dental Association (ADA) still claim that ‘Dental amalgam is a safe, affordable and durable restorative material.’?
According to my dentist, one very simple reason may be that they directly held patents on amalgam fillings. This creates an obvious incentive to avoid liability. There is also the profit motive— dental work is a very big business. (Also click here to read more.)
(‘Silver’ amalgams fillings are not just mercury and silver, but include other metals in small amounts such as nickel, tin, zinc, and copper. These are patented as specific amalgams.)
It appears that once a dentist has become a dentist— which takes a great deal of education and training, time and money— they discover that in order to practice, they require the approval of a sanctioning body such as the ADA. After that it is easy for the ADA to keep everyone in line by mere threat of revoking one’s license.
(Sound familiar?)
But once you step out of dentistry, many sources will tell be happy to tell you how toxic mercury is. If a thermometer were to break on the floor in a hospital, they would have to shut down that entire section for HAZMAT cleanup.
People with fillings in their mouths may easily get more than the OSHA limits each day.
There have been battles over mercury fillings (are they good or bad?), going back to even the pre-ADA era. For much more on this, check out the book, It’s All In Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness by Hal Huggins. Huggins is famous for bringing much of this to light back in the 1990s.
As he discovered, 90-97% of patients with even one single amalgam filling had abnormal responses to his tests.
What sort of problems and conditions can result from mercury?
The following includes many potential symptoms of mercury intoxication, curated from a handful of reputable sources (which are referenced throughout this post). There will be some repetition in the lists, which serves to drive home the frequency with which the same conditions are reported.
Of course not everyone will have all of the following conditions. Most people experience symptoms as themes: For one person it may be a heart condition, palpitations, headaches and circulatory problems; for another it will be neurological functions and memory loss; for many the eyes comes into play; and for many digestive problems will be primary. For me it was skin, mucous membranes, food intolerances and fatigue.

Mercurius Solublis from Nature’s Materia Medica
To begin, we can look at entries in homeopathic Materia Medica reference books.
As a reminder, all of the symptoms listed in these books are detailing what the substance causes in healthy people (and therefore can treat or cure when manifest as illness and disease).
The following is the complete entry of ‘Merc Sol’ from Nature’s Materia Medica by Robin Murphy. It includes nine pages of conditions caused by mercury, as documented by homeopathic provings, clinical practice, and through observing cases of mercury poisoning. Note that there are other ‘Mercurius’ remedies in the Materia Medica as well, this is just the most commonly used one.
Also remember, when using the Materia Medica in the practice of homeopathy, no one will ever present with ALL of the symptoms. Usually we look for a three-legged stool to stand on, so to speak, or one major really unique keynote (symptom), or a theme.
We may also find, for example, both constipation and diarrhea under one homeopathic medicine— one person may present with one and another the other. The same with chronic fatigue and insomnia showing up as keynotes of the same remedy. (And in some cases people will present with both problems in alternation, or at different times.)
For now, we are looking at the entire list of symptoms and conditions that are related to mercury—
From the book Extra Strength Homeopathy by Manfred Mueller

It is also noted in many sources that mercury promotes cancer.
I have a strong suspicion that a great many conditions such as schizophrenia, bi-polar, dissociation, feeling fragmented and unreal, unexplained panic, and conditions like these are also related. With mercury it is as if the nervous system just overloads really easily. Then most people get started on medications, which confounds the whole thing.
The following Meta-Analysis of Metal Allergies includes a great deal of data linking metals and allergies (all types of metals, not just mercury) and is very interesting to peruse:
Mixed Metals—
An important side note here: In addition to the problems from mercury (as if that wasn’t enough!), when we get a combination of metals going in the mouth (or body), it can greatly exacerbate problems.
For instance, if there is a gold filling or crown in the mouth, in addition to silver amalgam, it will cause the mercury from the amalgam to leach faster.
It creates what is called a galvanic reaction. Literally like a battery. In addition to the mercury that leaches out, and the vapors that are coming from the amalgams, there is charge in all of the fillings, which creates current. This has been tested and confirmed. The same issue can arise with metals in other parts of the body, such as joint replacements.
According to Hal Huggins, high copper amalgam fillings are the most deadly, and gold generally the least reactive. But it absolutely depends on the person.
Melisa.org has very interesting information linking mercury with scoliosis, as well as testimonials about health improvements that followed the removal of various metals from the body (from amalgam fillings to titanium implants). Stainless steel, for example, leaches nickel into the body.
A few more notes on metals in dentistry—
-The metal in most dental crowns is gold and/or nickel.
-Mercury may also be hiding under crowns and bridges.
-Braces are usually mostly nickel.
-Mercury can end up in root canals as well.
-And mercury and other toxins may even show up in some of the plastics that are used.
‘Most of the adverse reactions to nickel are similar to those of mercury toxicity. Neurological disturbances, emotional upsets, and blood problems (like leukemia) can be initiated by nickel crowns.’
— Hal Huggins
‘I decided to investigate the coloring agents used in denture acrylic. It turns out that the pink coloring agents are cadmium sulfate and mercury sulfate.’
— Hal Huggins
I, personally, know someone who had a terrible reaction to Invisalign liners and also to some eyeglass frames.
Meridians
This is beyond the scope of this article, but briefly, the meridians make up the electric grid of the body, to to speak. And this is partly why the ‘charge’ from metal in teeth (and the body) can be so disastrous.
Each tooth is connected by meridians to different body parts. Many people will find that they have health issues in the areas associated with their problem teeth. Each tooth has a number, which is standardized. See here for a simple diagram with the tooth numbers and the areas of the body they are linked to:
Some interesting quotes that I have never seen anywhere else—
“Dr Huggins noted that the incidence of both ALS and MS started going through the roof after 1976, with the introduction of high-copper amalgams, which release about fifty times more mercury than the older formulations of amalgam with less copper. Multiple Sclerosis was not known before 1830, when mercury amalgam became a worldwide phenomenon!”
— Robert A Yoho, MD (ret), Judas Dentistry
“The symptoms of mercury poisoning and those of multiple sclerosis are identical. The main source of mercury to the general population is, of course, dental amalgam. In fact, mercury exposure occurs at a rate ten times higher through this source than through all other sources combined, including seafood. 634 Studies have found mercury-related mental effects to be indistinguishable from those of MS.”
— Robert A Yoho, MD (ret), Judas Dentistry
‘Streptococcus mutans, which is in everyone’s mouth already, has the highly developed ability to methylate mercury.’
‘Methylated mercury, commonly known as methylmercury, is a toxic form of mercury that forms when inorganic mercury is converted by bacteria in the environment. It is highly dangerous as it can bioaccumulate in fish and shellfish, posing serious health risks to humans, especially through consumption of contaminated seafood.’
— Search engine
‘Mercury-toxic patients frequently have a low body temperature, because chances are there is mercury blocking the thyroid hormone.’
— Hal Huggins
‘…people process thought differently with amalgams than they do after amalgam removal.’
— Hal Huggins
‘For patients who do not take insulin, amalgam removal has helped to bring down elevated glucose levels significantly.’
— Hal Huggins
‘Mercury alters the effectiveness of antibiotics.
‘Five weeks after silver-amalgam fillings were placed in monkeys, the bacteria in their intestines became resistant to mercury. Simultaneously, they became resistant to some of the most commonly used antibiotics, including penicillin, streptomycin, kanamycin, and tetracycline.’
The resistance action here involves the action of bacteria when exposed to mercury. Most cells would die upon this exposure, but certain bacteria are able to defend themselves by picking up an extra piece of DNA from surrounding tissues and attaching it to their own DNA. Such an addition is called a plasmid. With the addition of the plasmid, the bacteria become resistant to mercury, and no longer take the invading inorganic form of mercury and convert it to an organic, excretable form. This gives the bacteria’s host an additional dose of methyl mercury, which is highly toxic to many systems in the body. The nervous and reproductive systems are particularly sensitive to this process.
The new bacteria form (the original one plus the plasmid) has other changed metabolic characteristics, too. It is now resistant to antibiotics that would normally kill it. And the new bacterial form is able to reproduce the plasmid along with its own DNA, so it will always retain its resistance to certain antibiotics. This is one of the factors that has led to the development of the “antibiotic-of-the-month club” we have seen in the past several decades. As you can see, the ways in which mercury can affect our bodies are practically unlimited.’

‘Some people suggest that fillings should therefore become less of a problem the older they get. “No,” say the allergy doctors. “The more often you are exposed to a substance, the more apt you are to become allergic to it.” In addition to this factor, mercury is a cumulative poison.’
—Hal Huggins
‘Overall, this most useful analysis parallels one of my most practical discoveries. Most people who suffer from mercury toxicity are constantly fatigued. They sleep more than eight hours a night and wake up tired. Many have been to a physician for chronic fatigue and have had a blood test done. The red cells and hemoglobin were excellent so they were told to see a psychiatrist because, “It’s all in your head.”
Well over half of my patients have followed this pattern. They feel insulted by the suggestion that they are using fatigue as a sham to avoid obligation. After seeing this pattern in hundreds of patients, even before I was aware of mercury toxicity, I began to wonder what biochemical explanation could lie behind the syndrome. Dr. Al Belian, who bugs me by dropping new ideas on me every few months, called with an idea that became what I feel is the answer. Remember those sulfur bonds I mentioned in the blood profile section? Dr. Belian told me that hemoglobin has four of these binding sites on each molecule, and that mercury can easily attach to them.
Then I started thinking. What if one mercury atom got onto one sulfur position out of the four possible? Hemoglobin’s oxygen-carrying capacity would drop 25 percent. Could a 25-percent drop in oxygen make someone feel fatigued? Couldn’t inefficient transport produce the same effect as low hemoglobin? Then I noticed another interesting point. Some of those patients had quite good hemoglobin levels, even higher than high normal. Further, they had a high hematocrit. Hematocrit is a term used to indicate the percentage of blood that is composed of red blood cells. I have noted that when all biochemical and nutritional systems are in balance, the hematocrit is usually 44 to 46 percent. Normal, as seen by hospital laboratories, can extend down to 38 percent. Yet some of my fatigued patients were running as high as 52 to 54 percent. That doesn’t make sense. Unless…what if the body recognizes that it is not transporting enough oxygen, and it compensates for this deficiency by crowding more red blood cells into the bloodstream? That would produce a high concentration of low-efficiency hemoglobin. The result of this is a good-looking blood chemistry, and a fatigued, “anemic” patient who makes the pilgrimage from doctor to doctor.’

The Hal Huggins quotes are from the book, It's All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury, Amalgams, and Illness.
https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8276940/:
‘Chronic exposure to mercury vapor results in a well-defined clinical pictures known as mercurialism. Symptoms include tremors, behavioral alterations and disturbances such as extreme shyness, loss of memory, irritability and persistent insomnia (Magos 1997). Studies with workers formerly exposed to vapHg0 showed symptoms may last until several years after cessation of exposure due to Hg2+ retention in brain.’ (Ellingsen et al. 1993; Kishi et al. 1994; Steckling et al. 2014).
‘Indeed, large-scale cohort epidemiological studies in the Faroe Islands and New Zealand studies pointed that the regular consumption of high mercury food - such as whale (Faroe) and shark meat (New Zealand) - by pregnant women translated in lower performance results by their children when tested for several neurodevelopmental endpoints (cognitive and motor skills) in the years following birth.’
Watch (4 min.)— TV anchor says mercury fillings gave her Multiple Sclerosis symptoms:
Finally, let’s not discount the effects of mercury plus radiation. If you missed this article, check it out and don’t miss Lucille Ball telling her story about receiving radio signals in her teeth. Her story is specific to the fillings in her teeth, but there are also clear cases where mercury in a person’s tissues has caused them to become hypersensitive to electricity, and nowadays we should include EMFs.
One case, observed by the homeopath Dr. John Clarke, was of an electrician who could originally handle large electric shocks. After he started working with his hands in a trough of liquid mercury, he became hypersensitive to the mildest of electric shocks.
Mercury is highly conductive, which can lead directly to hypersensitivity.
Why are there so many chronic infections with mercury?
Having chronic infections that a person just can’t kick is often a sign of mercury intoxication in the body. Such as the UTIs that a woman just can’t get rid of. Or it might manifest as getting sick all the time. (If you have chronic infections but no known mercury, then root canals and cavitations can be another cause.)
From what I understand the situation is twofold:
Mercury causes damage and sets up inflammation. Bacteria and microbes are generally opportunistic and will go for compromised areas. And, as noted above, mercury can cause the bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics and the usual solutions.
Dr. Dietrich Klinghardt discovered the following about latent chronic infectious diseases: Mercury physically enters all organs and tissues, and it would literally kill every cell it comes in contact with, except for an ingenious defense mechanism of the body. The body ‘stands down’ just enough to allow a chronic infection to remain in the body. This is because mercury can then be taken up by and reside in these microbes, instead of healthy cells. It is a protective mechanism. This also may explain why every time there is a lowering of immunity, there can be a reappearance of the condition, such as shingles or UTIs reappearing every time the immune system is lowered. And these microbial cultures in the body can be kept in place and harbored over decades.
In cases like this, homeopathy often can help to keep the chronic infections in check, but usually the remedies cannot be stopped for long or the problem recurs.
Which is the definition of obstacle to cure.
I have also seen very frustrating situations where a homeopathic remedy acts for a little while and then stops helping. So the person searches for a new remedy to get some relief, only to have the same pattern repeat over and over again.
However, once we address the CAUSE, then these chronic infections can be resolved once and for all.
Removing Sustaining Causes
Where do we get exposed to mercury?
In order to remove it, we need to know where it comes from, so that we can first halt any continued exposures. After that we can work to remove what remains in the tissues.
This section is to illustrate that, in addition to mercury amalgam fillings, many people have been, or are being exposed to, mercury in other ways.
Past Exposures and Medicines—
-If you talk to people born in the 1950s or earlier, they all will have stories about playing with balls of mercury and using mercury products topically for skin conditions when they were young.
-Most people born before 2010 have been injected with thimerosal, the mercury preservative in vaccines and flu shots. (And of course there are other issues with these injections, such as aluminum, and the myriad ‘adjuvants’ from formaldehyde to phenol, which are extremely toxic on their own.)
-A surprising number of pharmaceuticals, including plenty of Chinese and Indian medicines, still contain some amounts of mercury. (Be sure to check anything you are taking!) Mercury and its derivatives have been used as anti-parasitic, anti-syphilitic, anti-pruritic, anti-inflammatory, and diuretic medicines, and as a preservative for over 3,000 years.
Mercury was one of the primary treatments that doctors used in Samuel Hahnemann’s day, and one of the treatments he despaired of.
Some Products That (Still!) Contain Thimerosal —
Contact Lens Solutions, Nasal Sprays, Ointments, Spermicides; Eye Drops; and other common pharmaceutical products.
Occupational Exposures—
-Although the industrial use of mercury is decreasing, occupational mercury exposure is still recognized in more than 60 industries, including the manufacture of glass thermometers, batteries, barometers, neon lights, paper, paint, jewelry, pesticides, fungicides, chlorine and caustic soda, and in dental practice. You can read more on some of these topics here.
Mercury in paint was banned in 1990, but prior to that is was in many paints that we likely used.
My father, who grew up farming, says they used to use their bare arms in buckets of mercury for treating seeds prior to planting. (And all who worked the fields with him were continually doused with the herbicide 2,4-D, aka Dioxin, a primary ingredient in Agent Orange.)
Dietary Sources—
Ocean fish, and in particular tuna, are known to have relatively high levels of methyl mercury. If you already have a mercury load, definitely look to remove food sources. (And in general I would anyway!)
There is a link between already being sensitized to mercury (via dental fillings for example) and anaphylactic reactions to seafood.
According to Mueller, salmon and mountain trout are still pretty safe. But not all salmon— farm raised Norwegian salmon being very toxic.
Smoking—
The levels of mercury and many other metals and toxins, such as cadmium, that are inhaled can be VERY high. This includes cigarettes, vaping, and marijuana. If you are going to smoke, go for the organic tobacco.
(Interestingly, I always hear that people don’t really enjoy the ‘natural’ cigarettes— which makes an even more clear distinction between straight-up tobacco products and the chemically laden ones that are designed to be ultra-addictive.)
Note: Anyone smoking marijuana should be aware that the Chinese marijuana that has entered the US market is laden with super toxic chemicals that we don’t even have tests for, and in some cases is even being laced with fentanyl.
Dental Sources—
If a person ever had mercury amalgam fillings, the person has mercury, unless they took the steps to detoxify.
If there are current amalgam fillings, there is a constant daily mercury exposure.
Frequently mercury is hiding under crowns and in root canals as well.
If you have a dental source and health conditions, I would 100% start there. It’s picking the low hanging fruit. You have a very high probability that your health conditions will improve, and even resolve, by removing the source from your body, and even better if you follow up with detox.
Can I test for mercury?
There are very few reliable tests for mercury. The tests are expensive, not many know how to properly conduct them, and even the chelation process that is done to conduct tests properly can send some patients into a tailspin by getting too much mercury circulating in the blood at one time.
The DMPS Challenge Test is one that makes mercury circulate out of the tissues and into the blood where it can actually be measured. However, this is not readily available.
Blood and urine tests may not very useful, this is because mercury is bound in the tissues and generally isn’t circulating. And measuring the amount of mercury being excreted in the urine (a good thing) is not at all the same as discovering what is stored in the tissues.
Hair tests may require interpretation from an expert. Hal Huggins would extrapolate mercury toxicity not just by mercury in the hair, but also according to other readings that were low or high, as clues.
‘In working with the patch test, I found only 33 percent of the 1,000 people tested actually turned red at the site of the patch. But systematic reactions were demonstrated by 90 percent of those tested.’
— Hal Huggins, It's All in Your Head: The Link Between Mercury Amalgams and Illness
Olioscans may be one option. And you could also consider working with someone such as an A.R.T. practitioner to determine exactly what you have going on and what you need.
However, if you have mercury fillings, you have a mercury problem. No tests required.
And all of us have been exposed to mercury and many other metals and toxins throughout our lives.
The good news is that our top chelators of mercury are safe and gentle and also detox many other metals and toxins (from cadmium and aluminum to glyphosate and fire retardants), so anyone could use them, easily and inexpensively, without requiring tests.
If You Need a Dentist for Mercury Amalgam Replacement—
If you think you have dental work that has mercury, or you aren’t sure, it’s pretty easy to find out. Silver amalgam fillings are visible to the eye, and any metals that might be buried (say in a root canal) can be seen by x-ray, even the regular kind of x-rays. (Metals can easily be seen by x-ray— but not dental infections which is another story for another day.)
Some people even have deposits of mercury in their gums (called ‘mercury tattoos’), which can also be detected by x-ray.
Nowadays, biological and holistic dentists are generally using 3D Cone Beam Scans, which are a fancy way of using x-rays to get a 3-D model of the inside of the head.
This allows the teeth and jaw to be viewed from multiple angles, and also allows for the density of bone to be tested, in case of cavitations. (More on cavitations and root canals in the final article in this series, today we are focusing on dental amalgam fillings.)
If you do have mercury fillings, the first step is to get them removed or replaced—
(I’m sorry to say there is no way around this.)
-The International Academy of Oral medicine and Toxicology is one good place to start when looking for a dentist who understands safe mercury removal.
-There are also three dentists in the US who use the Hal Huggins’ approach.
-Here’s another potential source of leads— The International Academy of Biological Dentistry and Medicine (IABDM).
However, not all dentists who understand safe mercury removal are necessarily listed on these sites. You can also begin by searching locally for a biological or holistic dentist. That is how I found Dr. Becky, the dentist who replaced my mercury fillings.
My dentist is not listed on the above sites, but when I talked to her, she was exactly what I was looking for. Her practice is fluoride-free and mercury-free, and she has done many mercury amalgam replacements, as well as removal of root canals, and other procedures to help reverse the damaging effects of traditional dentistry.
In contrast to her approach: When I was shopping around for a dentist, I found that if I called a regular family practice dentist and asked about mercury removal, they would say, ‘Oh, sure we do that all the time.’ So I would ask how they did it, and the answer was along the lines of, ‘Oh, we drill them out all the time. We just suction up from the mouth as we go.’ If I asked about using rubber dams, for example, their attitude indicated that they thought was unnecessary, but they would consider it upon request.
This isn’t a good idea for anyone, including the dentists and staff. Especially if you already have health issues, and are sensitive, the exposure to the mercury upon removal could send you into a health tailspin. I am sure this is where the horror stories of mercury filling removals come from— when people end up worse than before.
What you are looking for is Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal, sometimes called SMART mercury removal, which includes the following practices:
• Gowns and hairnets for everyone.
• Dentist and assistants wearing masks to protect themselves.
• Air supply over the patient’s nose.
• A large suction hose over the working area.
• Rubber dams used to isolate the teeth to be worked on, per quadrant. (These dams isolate the mercury so that it never touches your skin.)
• The mercury is then removed in as large chunks as possible, to keep the level of particulates to a minimum.
• Suction and water are used continuously.
Some holistic-type dentists will also incorporate the use of ozone in their practices. Others may integrate intravenous Vitamin C. Mine gave me a small liquid dose of charcoal prior to starting the filling replacement procedures, to help carry out any particles afterwards.
For me, it took three and a half hours to replace all six of my mercury fillings with composite fillings. This included everything listed above, with rubber dams in the three quadrants of my mouth that had to be worked on, one at a time. The mercury removal part was very fast, and then there was the drilling and filling with new composite material. And we took a little break in the middle. On the whole it was quite doable. And now it is done!
What should I replace the silver amalgam fillings with?
I didn’t hesitate to go with the composite fillings. Composite fillings (also called resin) are tooth colored and are made out of ground glass powder mixed with a plastic binder. My understanding is they are much less toxic and also quite durable. Whereas porcelain may not last as long.
Gold fillings are also an option, however, keep in mind that they are another metal. As discussed above, do not mix metals in your mouth, or possibly even your body.
Hal Huggins tested sensitivity to amalgam components and found that 90% of people were sensitive to mercury and only 9% to gold. However, if you are one of those 9%, or if you get a lot of gold, it could be a problem.
Mueller shares a story of a woman with depression and health issues who came to him for homeopathic treatment. While taking her case he discovered that she had spent a small fortune getting a whole mouthful of gold crowns.
If you read Aurum Metallicum in a homeopathic Materia Medica you will see what symptoms gold can cause. And the symptoms were a dead match for this woman’s conditions. (She did not pursue treatment with Mueller, which would have meant revisiting all of that expensive dental work!)
Note: Aurum Metallicum 200C is the top Banerji Protocol remedy for depression.
‘The most recent results of double-blind tests on over 3,500 patients shed the following light on immune reactivity of amalgam components: 95.29 percent were reactive to copper; 94.04 percent to zinc; 90.2 percent to mercury; 66.86 percent to silver; and 62.61 percent to tin.’
— Hal Huggins
As noted already, there are people who are sensitive to all kinds of materials, including plastics. If you are concerned, do get tested for compatibility before you go down this path. There are some dentists who include biocompatible testing as part of their treatment, particularly those who use the Huggins approach.
Whatever you decide to replace the mercury with
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT:
You can do as many mercury filling replacements as you want in a two week period, then you must wait two and a half months to continue. After that you can repeat the same cycle. (Two weeks and wait two and half months.)
This avoids too many exposures within one immune cycle.
Manfred Mueller came to this after working with thousand of clients. He finds that anyone who follows this will not have any major aggravations or flare ups.
I, personally, had only very small aggravations over the first couple of days after the mercury removal.
The first night I had a brief period where my feet burned like fire. I had never had that symptom before. I also had a mild resurgence of itchy scalp, and some little flare ups of red spots on my cheeks in the old familiar rosacea pattern. None of these lasted.
Also, the first day post-mercury removal that I took my cilantro and chlorella I got a very bloated and uncomfortable abdomen. But one dose of Merc Sol 6C took that down to nothing. And that was the end of that.
I have a client who didn’t wait the full two and a half months after her first go-round with mercury filling replacement, and she had a major UTI flare up. The next round she followed the above procedure and fared much better. She also found that intravenous Vitamin C helped her a lot, without it she experienced an energy crash after having the work done.
What is the cost of mercury amalgam replacement?
I’ve had clients share with me what it cost them, so that I could compare and report to you all. But what I found is that the cost varies SO widely that I would definitely shop around. I spent right at $430 per tooth for the safe removal of mercury fillings and replacement with composite. This included the 3D Cone Beam Scans, regular x-rays and a full exam prior to the work.
I would not expect to go out and get dental insurance for this kind of dental work. But if you already have dental insurance, definitely try to use it.
I did attempt to get insurance for this purpose, and I got reimbursed just a tad more than what it cost me in insurance premiums. The insurance company also did not cover composite fillings on any back teeth (only front, visible teeth).
And this is part of the problem with the system— that insurance companies may only cover mercury fillings!
However, if you already have a corporate or group plan, you may fare much better. From my research they seem to have much better coverage.
Getting Started—
I would get an exam, including the 3D Cone Beam Scans, with a dentist you think you might want to work with. (You can always transfer recent diagnostics to another office, if you decide to work with someone else.)
Have the dentist come up with a treatment plan for you, including all of the dental codes.
They should also be able to submit this to your insurance provider to get a coverage estimate.
Also, with these codes you can easily check with any insurance provider yourself. (Every company will have a schedule of the codes and what they cover in each category.)
For example D2391 is a resin-based composite filling, one surface, posterior. This is the same throughout dentistry.
Which is why you need an exam, because you can’t know what each of your fillings will be categorized as.
A treatment plan should also tell you the tooth number, and the surfaces involved (O, MOD, MODL). Again, these codes are the same for all dentists and insurers. With these codes you can also call other dentists and ask for prices to compare. (Some will provide it over the phone, although others will insist they must see you first.)
Of course, some fillings will be less expensive because they are smaller and more surface depth. Others that are older and cracked and deep may be more expensive. This will be noted in your treatment plan. And based on all of this information you can determine how best to proceed.
If you end up in a situation where a dentist is talking about root canals, please run (do not walk) in the other direction. That is straight out of the frying pan and into the fire. (Root canals and cavitations are so problematic they deserve a whole separate article.)
Lastly, you can also ask for cash discounts. I did!
And in some cases it might even be worth traveling to get the best care for the best price.
Hal Huggins reported that for most patients every last fleck of mercury had to be removed before their health started to improve.
I certainly could feel the difference in me almost immediately. And many report feeling like a cloud has lifted right away, even though it may still take some time to completely heal from all the years of mercury exposure.
Of course, no one wants to have to do any of this. I get that 100%. But I can’t think of any health-saving masure that is more worth your time and money than getting mercury out of your mouth.
Once the mercury source has been removed, then the detox begins!
Detoxing mercury and other metals means chelating them from the tissues. (Chelation refers to the bonding and sequestration of metal atoms.)
We don’t have to use methods that are expensive, require IV treatments, or that can come with intense aggravations and health setbacks.
By just doing daily care, we can effectively remove mercury (and much more while we are at it!), gradually and gently over time.
A very important thing to know is that it can take 3-5 years to remove mercury from the nervous system.
So this is not a race. It’s slow and consistent and gentle with improvements over time.
Mueller shares many case examples of clients stopping the detox items after a year or two, thinking they were done and cured (because they felt all better), but before long they had a return of symptoms and had to get started on the detox items again.
However after 3, 4 or even 5 years they were able to stop the daily detox and their cure held. (With homeopathic support all along the way.)
So we aren’t going for high amounts of chelation in a short time. And all we have to do is observe our symptoms, adjusting as needed, no fancy tests required.
The following methods have been shown to be effective by Manfred Mueller, Dr. Klinghardt and various others, including Professor Omura who discovered that the Minamata Japanese, who were all mercury damaged from their seafood, could be detoxed using cilantro.
And, the really cool thing about these simple items, is that they don’t only help remove mercury.
The cilantro and chlorella and Augmented NAC also help remove cadmium, nickel, lead, aluminum, arsenic, glyphosate, flame retardants, and even gadolinium (which is used for MRI brain scans and is very hard to get out of the body), and other toxins as well.
Dr. Klinghardt, who has been working with mercury detox for 40 years, also teaches about the important anti-cancer aspects of these simple agents and recommends that everyone use them daily, twice a day for prevention, and up to four times a day in case of an acute health crisis (such as cancer).
I will include links to my current favorite products, and to some others that are recommended by Dr. Klinghart:
At minimum, you want these two—
• Cilantro Tincture, Tincture (or fresh, see the smoothies below)— up to 1 teaspoon twice a day (or more if using fresh). Note that another name for cilantro is coriander.
• Chlorella Vulgaris Tincture, Tablets, Tablets (it must be ‘cracked cell wall’ chlorella vulgaris, which all of these are), or Chlorella Pyrenoidosa— up to 1 teaspoon twice a day, or equivalent.
The next items are optional, but highly recommended, for all around detox and health support—
• Parsley (aka Petroselinum Sativum) Tincture, Tincture, or Powder— up to 1 teaspoon twice a day, or equivalent.
• Augmented NAC— up to twice a day.
More and more people are coming to love the Augmented NAC. It increases glutathione, an important antioxidant which mercury depletes, gently helps to remove mercury and other metals and toxins, and it denatures the Spike Protein (another obstacle to cure) while you’re at it.
I also love that the cilantro, chlorella vulgaris, and parsley are naturally occurring foods, so I’m not adding a whole slew of supplements.
And I love that all of these can be safely used with animals too!
Detox Smoothies—
I have been incorporating the Medical Medium Heavy Metal Detox Smoothies into my diet, at least a few times a week, for a long time. I used these regularly for eight years prior to mercury filling replacement, and I believe they were very supportive in managing the mercury levels for all of these years (without aggravations). Here’s how I use them:
Important notes on detoxing—
Every body is different. Some people may be very sensitive and will have to start with even just a drop of the cilantro and chlorella vulgaris and build up the doses over times. Literally, just put one drop in water and drink it twice a day
Then you must increase it as you are able to.
So just work with it!
If you start to feel worse, cut back, or take a break and then resume at the last level that you tolerated well.
Worse might mean in general not feeling right, or an aggravation of specific symptoms, or new symptoms. If you start to experience symptoms ‘out of the blue’ the first thing to do might be to take a couple of days off of the detox and see if things settle down.
While I still had the mercury fillings in my mouth, I had to avoid ‘drawing’ substances. Bentonite clay, charcoal, zeolite, and chlorella all made me feel worse. I would also notice odd mouth tastes and smells increased after using them, which was the mercury vapors increasing.
I have heard reports from others that the chlorella is more aggravating for them as well, and I suspect most (though not all) people who still have mercury amalgams would do well not to start with chlorella until after removal.
If I were to choose just one to start with it would be the cilantro. But the cilantro and chlorella do work well together to draw out the mercury and then excrete it, so if you can do both, then that is recommended.
Personally, I used the detox smoothies and the cilantro tincture (which tastes really good by the way) until the mercury was out of my teeth. At that point I started the chlorella. (Which also tastes good and I get a nice energy boost from it as well.)
Many people do well with a rotation schedule on and off the detox items. For example one week on and one week off. Or five days on and two days off each week. Or three weeks on and one week off.
I find that I can use the cilantro all the time, but the chlorella is more intense. I was pushing my levels up and started to have unexplained anxiety and restless sleep and generally was feeling off. It finally dawned on me— when I got a little rosacea flare up on my face, and then re-read the Mercurius Solublis entry in the Materia Medica— that I was detoxing too hard.
So I added homeopathy for the symptoms (see below) and stopped all the detox items for a few days and things settled back down. Then I started back up with the detox smoothies (which have never aggravated me) and then added back in the others gradually.
Also, while you have mercury fillings, do not chew gum, and be aware that hot foods and drinks, acids and sugars all increase the vapors and flow of mercury out of the fillings. It became very to clear to me over the past couple of years that things like sugary lemon drinks were a real problem when mixed with mercury fillings. (You can just envision the increased metal corrosion!) My tooth neuralgia would go through the roof the night after foods such as these.
This is probably true of a great many sodas and junk foods as well.
Some Detox Alternatives—
I know all too well that there are people who are very sensitive to everything, who are dealing with OCD issues, or who are trying to help children who won’t cooperate with the green supplements. I also have adults who refuse cilantro because they don’t like the taste.
So, yes, there are some other options that can be considered—
Probably the most gentle detox option, that nearly anyone will tolerate is Ionic Foot Baths. I was both skeptical and amazed when I first heard about this, and since then I have come to appreciate their effectiveness:
• Ionic Foot Baths- Check out this video, and also be sure to read the few paragraphs posted below it which includes details that are not in the video.
If I were to buy an ionic foot bath set-up I would probably get this one that Dr. Klinghardt currently recommends, with the platinum array.
• Also interesting, cilantro deodorant has been shown to be very beneficial, particularly with breast cancer cases. (As noted above, cilantro also works to remove aluminum, versus the usual antiperspirants that add it! I found this Coriander and Lime natural deodorant and I absolutely love it. )
[I ordered the deodorant through Walmart, and apparently bought the last ones. So I contacted the company, The Natural Deodorant Company, which is based in the UK, and they said they would have it back in stock on Amazon as soon as possible.]
• Oral EDTA Calcium is one more option, highly recommended by Dr. Klinghardt, and which also detoxes all metals, including mercury, as well as the Spike Protein.
Here are some details on how to use it so that it can be assimilated properly—
-The dosage is 75 mg/kg of body weight per day, which comes to about 1 flat teaspoon for most people.
-To make it completely assimilable— Pour a little hot water on it and swish it around until dissolved 100%. (If not totally dissolved, or if taken all at once, it can result in diarrhea.)
-Then put in a bottle and sip throughout the day, or divide it into 4 doses per day.
This is another very safe detox option, and it may also be very helpful for chronic constipation.
• Additional binders can be helpful for carrying toxins out of the body, and they may work to tone down aggravations if any occur during detoxing—
Pectin is one example. I ate an apple every day for a year during an acute healing phase in my life, and I still make sure to have at least a few a week. For those who can’t tolerate apples and other fruits, I have a client who loves Pectasol, particularly the lime infusion flavor, and even her very sensitive gut tolerates it well. She also found this alternate option which is less expensive.
Mueller discusses at length the traditional methods of using binders such as wheat/gluten, butter, and sugar, as well as egg white (albumin).
He shares cases of kids who were chelating a bit too hard so they gave them cookies, or having people eat bread and butter, and eggs. I find most of my clients are sensitive to these foods, so they aren’t always a good option, but something to consider!
There are also binders such as Zeolite. This is the one that I would use if I were to try it again. As mentioned, I never could tolerate zeolites while I had fillings in my mouth, because they are effective at drawing out metals.
A little side note on glyphosate, which is so prevalent nowadays. According to Dr. Klinghardt, if you add glycine (up to 1 tsp twice a day) to the above primary detox items (the cilantro, chlorella and parsley) it will provide a complete glyphosate detox as well. (However, the three base items will work on the glyphosate over time, so you might not need this add-on unless you know you have glyphosate problem.)
Remember to avoid food-sources of mercury (such as tuna and seafood), and anything else you can do to eat healthy and clean will support your health. If you want a very simple model, start by avoiding sugar, alcohol and caffeine and that will at least get you moving in the right direction.
Also, Vitamins C, A and D can be very supportive for all types of healing.
Take note not to use charcoal supplements every day long term as they also remove fat soluble vitamins from the body. You can use it in cycles, but not forever.
Again, when detoxing from mercury, you will have to discover the products and pace that work best for you. I have people who still have mercury fillings in their mouth and do take the chlorella vulgaris daily with no problems. I have another person who had fillings removed and still has to be careful with the chlorella— too much or too often and he starts to get swollen and sensitive lymph nodes. He tolerates the cilantro fine daily, but has to do the chlorella on a less frequent basis, cycling on and off of it.
Breaks can be supportive, but just be sure to get restarted! This is one of those things that people can easily forget in the busyness of life. But it is a critical part of healing from mercury toxicity.
Again, these gentle oral metal chelation options taken daily are shown to remove mercury and other metals and toxins over many months or years. Klinghardt notes it takes about 9 months to remove gadolinium, for example. And Mueller has seen up to 5 years in severe neurological conditions. However, there will improvements all along the way.
Since we are constantly being re-exposed to a great many toxic products, including those being sprayed in the sky, I now just consider these detox items to be a part of my daily habit.
Homeopathy and Mercury
Yes, you can use homeopathy all along during this healing process. It can still be very helpful, even if it can’t break through fully until the underlying physiological cause is addressed.
Once people have removed the cause and completed the detox therapy, they will be cured much more rapidly and permanently. In the meantime homeopathy can keep them comfortable.
As for replacing amalgams, it has been found that just having the mercury removed can result in 90%+ of symptoms being alleviated or disappearing. In other cases the detoxification will be absolutely required, particularly in advanced chronic cases, such as Parkinson’s. Again, this is because the mercury is also stored in the body and doesn’t leave without help. Either way, feeling much better right away or not yet, I would do the detox to help prevent future problems and assure long term health.
This final section will touch upon using homeopathy during these various phases. We discussed clearing medications with homeopathy last time, but that principle doesn’t apply in the same way here.
The first thing people think of is that they should take homeopathic mercury.
But, remember, you can’t antidote what is still active.
Mueller talks extensively about this topic and warns everyone away from homeopathic mercury while there are still fillings in the mouth, or another active source of (daily or repeated) mercury exposure.
Here’s my take on that.
For Mueller the premier homeopathic antidote for mercury related symptoms is Hepar Sulph (aka Hepar Sulphuris Calcareum) in very low potency, which can be used daily, as needed.
He likes the Hepar Sulph 3X, which I have only found through OHM Pharmacy (must have an account) and Homeopathic Remedies Online.
Helios Homoeopathy stocks Hepar Sulph as low as 6X. And I have seen the Hepar Sulph in an 8X though Boiron and Amazon.
I have found that the easy-to-find Hepar Sulph 6C is very useful. And the Banerjis also used the 6C. You could experiment with any of these.
However, before I knew any of this, and before I was even thinking about the mercury in my mouth, I started taking Merc Sol 6C twice a day. It’s part of a wonderful Banerji Protocol for food intolerances (usually taken with Ipecac 30C at the same time) and it was also a complete fit for my system picture. (Duh!)
I took the Merc Sol 6C twice a day for a long time, probably a year and a half, and it greatly helped me get over my digestive and skin symptoms. I did try the Merc Sol 200 at first, but just sensed it was too strong to continue for long.
(The primary case that Mueller references is a woman who took Merc Sol 1M while she still had fillings and had a major aggravation.)
You can also look in your homeopathic repertory for other so-called antidotes to mercury. These are substances that help to antidote the effects of mercury overdose— many of which come straight from Hahnemann’s day, when this happened all the time due to the use of mercury medical treatments.
In my homeopathic repertory software, this is found under Mercury, abuse of.
I would start by taking a look at the ones in bold + red to see if any might be a good match for you. I have found, for example, that Aurum Metallicum can be very helpful in cases of autism. Possibly part of that is the mercury antidoting aspect.
Nitric Acid is another that is often a great fit for people with mercury-related syndromes.
I have (personally) used Carbo Veg and Sulphur quite a bit over the years. In fact, Sulphur has been a favorite of mine for restless legs at night.
Interestingly, we also find that the Banerji Protocols for many conditions may already have these mercury-related remedies ‘baked in’ to them:
For example—
Colitis pg. 61
Inflammation of large intestine— common symptoms: pain in abdomen, bloating, feeling of incomplete defecation, dizziness, occasionally frequent passing of stool, nausea, low appetite and lassitude. *See book for more notes.
Nat Sulph 200 one dose per week / Nux Vomica 30 twice a day *Plus see below
Aurum Metallicum 200 every third day / Kali Mur + Mag Phos 3X twice a day / Merc Sol 200 twice a day (up to every two hours if acute)
Psorinum 200 one dose per week / Cina Mother Tincture (or low potency) once a day
*In case of dysentery stool and abdominal gripe— Ipecac 30 + Merc Sol 6C every three hours until relief
+They also note that a healthy diet and lifestyle are essential to cure. [And mercury removal, I would add!]
Ulcerative Colitis pg. 124-125
Chronic condition, usually leads to an intake of medicines for the rest of the patient’s life. The Banerjis treated numerous cases successfully with permanent beneficial results. *See book notes for case study.
Merc Sol 200 twice a day / Carbolic Acid 6X one dose after every stool with blood
Cantharis 6C alternating with Hepar Sulph 6C every three hours
Mercurius Corrosivus 30C every three hours
In the case shared in the Banerji Protocols book, they specifically mention using Hepar Sulph ‘to combat the adverse effects of the mercury treatment’. (The same as what Mueller says, and here the Banerjis used a 6C.)
A reminder that Line 1 of the Banerji Protocols was shown clinically to help about 80% of cases. Lines 2 and 3 are for the cases that don’t respond after a good trial of Line 1 (usually 2-3 months to start).
Note also that the Drs Banerji used Merc Sol and Hepar Sulph and quite a few other homeopathic medicines that show up in the repertory under mercury, abuse of.
As the Banerji Protocols were clinically tested on (literally) thousands and thousands of people, I would pretty much always start there, whatever the condition, and then adjust only if needed.
In summary—
Primarily, I would focus on the condition and the best homeopathic medicines for that. If you are finding you need something else, to support symptoms, or from detoxing too hard, then adding Hepar Sulph 6C or lower, or Merc Sol 6C, or another option from the repertory, might be supportive. This is when having a good Materia Medica comes in very handy!
Then you just begin, using what seems best, noting how you are doing over time, and adjust. That is the dance with homeopathy.
The metal chelation goes along side-by side with the homeopathy. We don’t know how effective homeopathy might be at helping to usher out of the body mercury that is stored in tissues, or how long it might take. But we do know that the oral chelation method works.
So we use what we do know will remove metals and toxins and also the homeopathy for symptom management as needed, until we reach full cure.
‘Just remember, though, that once you have been sensitized to something like mercury, you can always expect to have some type of reaction to any future exposure.’
— Hal Huggins
Even years after mercury removal and detox and cure, you may still need the occasional dose of a homeopathic remedy. :)
This article has been epic to put together! Despite the length, there is even more that I could share with you, including so many case stories! That is why I am working on setting up a monthly Zoom meet-up for paid subscribers, in order to answer questions and share real-world examples in a live, face-to-face format. Stay tuned!
In closing, I always have to add that I don’t get anything from sharing any of the links above, and I am not a doctor and I do not diagnose or prescribe. All of this is for your educational enlightenment and to use (or not) as you see fit!

In 1965, Dr. Luc Chatlin became gravely ill with tuberculosis. He could not tolerate traditional medical treatments, and classical homeopathy did not help.
Chaltin's search for healing came upon a book that explained the importance of liver drainage (detoxification.) Consequently, Dr. Luc began using homeopathic remedies known to cleanse or “drain” the liver of toxins and combined these “drainers” with other homeopathic remedies known to support excretory function. He soon developed a combination formula and labeled it “Drainer.” His condition quickly improved. Within six months, there was no evidence of tuberculosis.
Dr. Luc Chaltin, developed the technique of “clearing the terrain” to help people who exhibit multiple symptoms that are vague, complicated, and difficult to diagnose.
Today, the American Academy of Clinical Homeopathy (AACH) recommends that it is important to take a Detoxifier along with any other [homeopathic] remedy and to take it daily as part of any wellness routine. NEWTON manufactures an OTC Detoxifier complex and a PRO Drainer complex. The remedies are the same in each. However, the PRO version is a higher potency. Components of Drainer are listed on product page: https://www.newtonlabs.net/PRO-Drainer/productinfo/R001/ [PRO Products are sold to and Dispensed by Health Professionals Only.]
