First, an Introduction to The ‘New’ Remedies
One of my projects this year was to read all of the New Materia Medica books (Volumes 1 through 3) by Colin Griffith.
Some years ago I had read through the Meditative Provings (Volumes 1 and 2) by Madeline Evans; and although I had occasionally used some of the remedies, the value of these new homeopathic medicines hadn’t really hit home yet.
In retrospect, I think that I needed to thoroughly and deeply work with the Banerji Protocols, the homeopathic repertory, and many very complex health cases, before I began to see a need for ‘new’ remedies’ at all.
What is meant by ‘new’ homeopathic medicines?
In this context, I am referring to the new homeopathic provings from a small group of people in the UK. This ongoing group, which they informally call The Guild, has included the above noted authors, Madeline Evans and Colin Griffith, as well as John Morgan (owner of the pharmacy Helios Homoeopathy), and many others, since the 1990s.
You can read the story of ‘The Guild’, and their process, in the first of Colin Griffith’s New Materia Medica volumes. (All links included just below.)
These ‘new remedy’ books were published starting in 2000.
Considering that Samuel Hahnemann did his first testing of Cinchona on himself around 1790, we could say these remedies are quite new, in comparison. Not the substances, necessarily, but the information about them— which is required to enter a new medicine into the homeopathic lexicon for use by practitioners.
These are the books that I am referring to:
(I purchased the PDF versions of the Griffith books from the publishers, see the links. That way I can search the digital files by word, which makes them infinitely more useful to me. However, you can find many places to buy the physical books, if you want to search around.)
Meditative Provings Volume 1 (‘The Purple Book’) by Madeline Evans (2000)
Meditative Provings Volume 2 (‘The Green Book’) by Madeline Evans (2005)
The New Materia Medica by Colin Griffith (2007)
The New Materia Medica Volume 2 by Colin Griffith (2011)
The New Materia Medica Volume 3 by Colin Griffith (2023)
These volumes from Evans and Griffith are not the exact same material.
In the instances where the same remedy is covered in both books, you will find many similarities in the information, as they come from the same proving from the same group. However, in format, Madeline Evans’ books use more of an outline form, while Colin Griffith fleshes his out with more background on each substance, and also includes case examples.
Colin Griffith’s first volume covers a lot of the same ground as Madeline Evans’ works. Griffith’s Volume 2 includes maybe fifty percent new remedies. And Griffith’s Volume 3 does not have any crossover with the books by Evans. (Which makes sense as this group’s provings of new homeopathic remedies has continued over the years, and still does to this day.)
For example, the remedies Ametrine, Banyan Tree, Bog Asphodel, Caesium, Ether, Lac Humanum, Mimosa, Spectrolite, Strawberry, Strontium, Wych Elm and others are found in Madeline Evans’ books and not in those by Colin Griffith.
Some new remedies in Colin Griffith’s volumes include Dolphin Sonar, Bursera Graveolens (Palo Santo), Cardamom, Ganoderma Lucidum (Reishi mushroom), Leprominium (covered in both of his Volumes 2 and 3), Microwave Radiation G3, Pineal Gland, and Shungite, to mention only a few.
You may notice that a few of the remedies are not entirely new, as they were known (at least somewhat) before the group did their provings. (Caesium and Lac Humanum, for example.) But most of the substances proved are totally new to homeopathy.
The two remedies that the group proved that were already well-established as homeopathic medicines are Nettle (Urtica Urens)— which is found in Evans’ green volume— and Calendula Officinalis (Marigold)— which is found in Griffith’s Volume 3. In this case, they are adding to the understanding of the remedies; particularly the more subtle aspects, versus the traditional focus on physical symptoms.
The remedy, Emerald, our topic for today, is covered by both authors.
You can find it in the The Meditative Provings Volume 1 starting on page 71 (‘the purple book’). In The New Materia Medica (Volume 1) by Colin Griffith, Chapter 14 is dedicated to Emerald.
You can also find a small entry for Emerald in Nature’s Materia Medica by Robin Murphy.
In format, Madeline Evans’ books use more of an outline style. Colin Griffith fleshes his out with more background on each substance, and also includes case examples.
To wind up this brief introduction to the sources of these new remedies, there are also a couple of related repertories that have been published. I don’t find these repertories to be all that useful, as they require sitting and searching laboriously by hand. But you might like to check them out!
I do have an add-on package as part of the Miccant Vision Repertorizing Software that I use, which includes the remedies from the Meditative Provings books.
And, as mentioned, I search the Colin Griffith PDFs (links above) by word quite frequently.
A quick note on these new provings and the use of what some consider to be ‘New Age’ terms. Foremost, chakras are not at all new; ancient cultures were discussing them thousands of years ago. Chakras, along with meridians (prevalent in Chinese medicine), are part of our energy anatomy, and everyone has them. (Just like everyone had gut bacteria long before there were microscopes to prove it.)
For at least 80 years there has been technology to capture and demonstrate the ‘light body’, and to measure the biophoton field that exists around all life forms— technology which has silently advanced, while never making headline news. Of course, there have also been many individuals who could perceive these energies long before ‘science’ started to catch on.
However, if you are averse to these concepts, feel free to skip these new provings and stick with the more traditional homeopathic remedies. As always, take what serves you, and leave the rest!
Homeopathy for the Eyes
Those of you who have been reading Homeopathy Rising for some time already know that if there is a Banerji Protocol for a condition then I encourage everyone to start there.
I have done so myself, for many years, with great results.
However, there are those protocols that have come up short in enough cases that I started looking for alternatives.
One area in particular has been that of vision (eyesight) and vision anomalies.
We do have a few options from the Banerjis, which may serve— but if they don’t (in this category especially, because there are so many options), resorting to the repertory can be very hit-and-miss.
The primary Banerji Protocol for most chronic eye conditions is:
Argentum Nitricum 200C twice a day
with or without Calcarea Carbonica 30C twice a day
There are a few other options that might be included or substituted— such as Syphilinum 30C, which could be used daily, or less frequently, depending on the diagnosis. (Always check the protocol books for details.)
And we also have Banerji Protocols for specific conditions, such as Cataracts:
Calcarea Carbonica 200C + Belladonna 3C once a day for many months
You can also reference the Banerji Protocol books directly for Corneal Ulcers, Entropion and Ectropion, Vitreous Hemorrhage, Eye Problems Due to Air Pollution, Macular Degeneration, Vision Problems, and Glaucoma— but you will notice a theme, and the above noted remedies will show up time and again.
Also, here’s the protocol for Conjunctivitis (an acute eye condition)— you’ll note the remedy ‘theme’ here as well:
Conjunctivitis—
Line 1: Argentum Nitricum 200C + Mercurius Solubilis 6C every three hours to twice a day, plus Belladonna 3C twice a day
Line 2: Syphilinum 30C twice a day (if Line 1 doesn’t give relief, and if there is considerable redness and congestion)
I do know of one woman who experienced an impressive improvement in vision using the Argentum Nitricum 200C twice a day. She had been told she would need eye surgery to avoid blindness, and within months she was seeing the dirt on the baseboards that had long been invisible to her.
So, none of this is to say these protocols never work for vision. The Banerjis would not have included them if they did not help many, many cases.
I have also seen case improvements using the Cataract Protocol.
But I have also found many times that even long use of these remedies has not helped with chronic vision issues.
And, the other issue I have run into, in many cases where women were taking Calc Carb over long periods of time, is that they gained weight, or couldn’t lose weight. (And I don’t know any women who find that to be acceptable!)
Emerald for the Eyes
Over the past year or so I realized that my vision was getting to be quite poor.
Certainly, over the past decade, our household stock of reader glasses has grown exponentially. It was about a decade ago that my husband and I started reaching for them to read, or see, small items in low light conditions.
But this current experience was considerably worse.
I knew what the signs on the road said, from memory, although I could no longer actually read them. And I couldn’t read the license plates on the cars in front of me, sometimes even while stopped at a red light.
I used to have excellent distance vision, which also was no longer the case.
So, as I was rediscovering the new remedy, Emerald, and it’s sphere of action for the eyes (and ever the first to experiment with something new), I decided to begin by using it myself.
I started out with Emerald 30C twice a day and, truly, within weeks, I was aware that I could see more clearly the signs on the road. I also wasn’t squinting so hard at the TV menu to find what I was looking for in the evening.
I ended up going off and on it a few times, testing it.
And each time the vision improvements held. And each time I resumed taking it, I discovered new improvements.
I found, just as they say in the books, that Emerald is fast acting. The majority of the improvements happened within this first week or two and then leveled out.
Later I went to Emerald 30C just once a day. But after a time this felt like too much (more below). At the moment I am taking it once a week.
My husband started taking the Emerald 30C twice a day, and he also has reported vision improvements. Out to eat at a restaurant, he doesn’t always require readers to see the menu anymore. And, recently, while painting a large room, he could see a tiny spider that had gotten trapped and needed to be moved.
He has continued to take the Emerald 30C twice a day.
Many other people, and many of my clients, have taken up the Emerald 30C, and I continue to hear only good things.
So far, I am the only one who has had to decrease the frequency. I have a chronic trigeminal neuralgia issue (upper molars to left eye) and, although I can’t prove exactly what is going on inside, my sense is that the Emerald is deeply helping with the nerve and the eye— but so deeply that I have to go slowly.
One day I was even mildly alarmed at the sensations in my left eye, until I realized that I actually was seeing exponentially better: Better than I’ve seen out of my left eye since I was 20. It’s as if the Emerald is reorganizing things. (It’s sphere of action is also the nervous system and the teeth.)
But, for me, the Emerald is so deeply acting that now if I take it multiple days in a row, I start to develop canker sores all under my tongue on that same side. Which is not something I have ever dealt with. (I do not think this is a proving, or an aggravation, but possibly moving something out— such as long-time herpes/shingles.)
This is only to share that, in some cases, daily doses might not be the best fit.
Because the action is so clear at the start, this might be a remedy to take for one or two weeks, then take a break, and resume in cycles.
Again, I am the only one so far who has had to titrate the dose to get the desired effect without issues.
Apparently, the beryl family of gemstones (which includes emeralds) has always been highly regarded as having healing power over the eyes.
A few notes on Emerald from Griffith’s New Materia Medica:
-Glaucoma and cataract. Vision affected; long or short sight becomes exaggerated.
-To protect and strengthen the eyesight.
-Ear and eye pathology.
Also dyslexia is found in bold in Murphy’s Materia Medica.
Interestingly, the chapter on Emerald from Griffith also includes this note:
-Unable to lose weight in patients who have hormonal difficulties (as in those who would need Calc-carb).
So maybe we have an eye remedy that won’t cause weight gain? Only time will tell.
Emerald and Radiation
‘One of the main anti-radiation remedies and should be considered for anyone who does not respond to indicated remedies, as this can be a sign that there is excessive radiation clinging to the person. (It can be given in combination with other radiation remedies and is said to enhance them.)’ - Colin Griffith
‘Can clear on its own, almost any radioactive force that has penetrated the body.’ - Madeline Evans
‘…excellent remedy for radiation miasms, use as a medium to enhance radiation remedies, it will increase their power fourfold.’ - Madeline Evans
At the end of April I flew to Arizona, and upon disembarking from the first flight, I was startled by how much worse my vision was. My whole head felt fuzzy. It really brought home the effects of radiation exposure on the eyes (and more).
After arriving at my destination, I tested a new combo for radiation (and shedding) that is also found in the New Materia Medica (see Volume 3, Chapter 31, Rainwater- Chiselhurst).
Radiation and Shedding Combo:
Rainwater + Silica + 5G 200C
[Note: These rates can all be found in the Vitalis and can be imprinted together, which is what I did at the time: RAINWATER CHISELHURST 38532 + SILICEA 965742 + MOBILE PHONE RADIATION MAST 5G 47842818]
This combination supports radiation exposures, and is also discussed in the book for spike protein shedding, which I was exposed to pretty much the entire journey.
After one dose, I felt an energy lift almost immediately, with a head and eye ‘reset’.
(Note that this is a combo that is best used just after exposure, once or twice— repeated dosing doesn’t seem to provide additional benefit.)
This got me thinking and reminded me of the radiation combo from Helios, called Radiation Combination (Guild), which includes Emerald, Plutonium Nitritcum, Radium Bromatum, Rainbow, Rose Quartz, and Yellow. I already owned it in a 30C.
I am currently taking this combo once a week, which gets me my dose of Emerald, and I find the whole combination to be uplifting.
(This is a deep acting combination, and I also would not use it daily, unless an extreme case and/or a perfect fit.)
I like that it is a combination for ‘clearing’ radiation that doesn’t have the common radiation frequencies in it. Because, as discussed, when we take a remedy while actively being exposed to it, we can’t actually ‘clear it’ (because we are still being exposed). In some cases it could actually be aggravating.
Since most of us are constantly being exposed to WIFI, EMFs, 5G etc., it’s nice to have options.
[Note the ‘Guild’ in the combo title. Any remedy from Helios with (Guild) after it, refers to these ‘new’ remedy provings and combinations from the same group.]
The Helios Radiation Combination can also be replicated using the Vitalis, however, it’s too many digits to be able to do all in one imprint, so would have to be done in steps. Note that ‘Rainbow’ is found in the Vitalis rates under Spectrum, as in full-spectrum light.
I also like to give this Radiation combination to the local rivers periodically. :)
Emerald and the Ears
I have a friend who has been taking the Emerald 30C for her long-time chronic hearing loss, and did notice improvement in her ability to hear within a short period. Again, the progress seems to have leveled out.
A few notes on Emerald from Griffith’s New Materia Medica:
-Tinnitus comes and goes. Hardness of hearing. ‘There’s none so deaf as those that won’t hear’; hearing and ear problems from emotional causes.
-Ear and eye pathology.
I would love to know if people find improvement from tinnitus symptoms. That has been one of the common issues most impervious to treatment (not just with homeopathy). It is a condition that many are dealing with these days.
(And chronic radiation exposure is one of the prime suspects.)
Emerald and Dental Procedures
Probably Emerald is best know for support with dental extractions:
From Colin Griffith’s New Materia Medica:
-Reduces pain and complications during and after surgical extractions.
-Is the first remedy to consider for those who are about to have anything extracted: teeth, appendix, gall bladder, etc.
-Encourages the body to let go of the offending or diseased part without storing the memory of trauma to the surrounding tissue. (This is particularly important in cases when the disease of the part to be removed has not yet fulfilled its purpose as is often the case in the growth of warts and polyps that are all too often removed before they are ‘mature’.)
-Useful to relieve emotional distress after general anaesthetics.
-First remedy of choice for aiding dental extraction. Toothache.
-Teeth problems.
Quote from the same source:
‘Emerald is remarkable in dentistry. When given minutes before an extraction it can facilitate the removal of a tooth and keep pain and complications to a minimum. Personal experience has shown that Emerald 30 followed by Hypericum 6 taken while in the chair, meant that the extraction of a relatively deep filling, which required drilling into a molar, could take place without any anaesthesia in one whose dental pain threshold is not high.
Taking the idea of extraction further, I have used Emerald in cases where an operation has been necessary to remove an offending part: gall bladder, polyps, prostate for example; even a kidney, in one instance. In each case where Emerald 200 was given as near as possible before the procedure, no complications ensued, painful sequelae were avoided and surgical wounds healed very rapidly. In addition, it was noticeable in almost every case that the emotional trauma that is often attendant on operations was more or less absent. (It should be added that in cases of the removal of an organ, I have always used complementary remedies to follow Emerald to minimize the risk of adhesions and scar tissue; also Ayahuasca when the internal organs have been manhandled and left askew and out of place and have recommended that the patient should consult a cranial osteopath as well.)
So often, by letting go of an offending part of the body in which the disease element has reached maturity, the patient is acknowledging the metaphor of negative or corrupt emotion that is held in the item. For this reason Emerald has also become useful as a remedy to be given before the removal of warts (and veruccae), moles and tumours, benign or malignant.’
I know a number of people who have used Emerald 200C before and after dental surgeries. However, it’s always very hard to say for sure what each remedy did, without a side-by-side comparison— since everyone still takes all the usual surgery and pain remedies, which also greatly smooth the way.
Was the outcome better than it would have been otherwise?
Adding the Emerald certainly hasn’t hurt!
So far, I’ve been sharing uses of Emerald with which I am directly familiar.
In the following, I’ll share some other possible uses, with quotes from the same sources. This is not meant to be exhaustive— please read about Emerald in the books cited above for much more information.
Emerald and the Throat
-Sensations of constriction and of lump in the throat. Causes difficulty in expressing emotions or creative ideas. Allergies that cause swelling of the throat. Dryness of throat and mouth. Cancer of the throat.
-Any throat pathology. Choking sensations. Inability to communicate, to express self.
Emerald and the Nervous system
-Useful in any condition where there is exhaustion and debility due to an overtaxed nervous system: Alzheimer’s, epilepsy, senility, ME, after strokes or brain injuries or when the patient has been through a traumatic episode.
-Calms all aspects of nervous system— mental illness, tremors, twitching, arching of back, constriction of neck, facial distortion, protrusion of tongue, repetitive gestures such as running at body, pricking at clothes.
-Brain damage; Encourages regeneration of nervous tissue; Down’s syndrome, congenital conditions.
-Extremely tired, desire to sleep.
-To improve memory and intellect.
Combinations with Emerald
The following are suggestions from the same books (see above):
• ‘Emerald improves the circulation and serves to cleanse the lymph system when used in low potencies.’
• ‘Emerald 6X + Crataegus 6X + Kali-mur 6X as a heart tonic: twice daily.’
• ‘Rad-brom 30C + Caesium 30C + Emerald 30C has been used successfully in cases affected by jet lag.’
• ‘Ayahuasca + Ignatia + Emerald is useful for inconsolable grief that is nevertheless being expressed (rather than buried) when the patient is angry, confused and hurt and has taken things too personally.’ (No specific potency given. These types of combos for emotional states might be used from 6X to 10M, depending on the case)
• ‘Hornbeam + Syphilinum + Emerald: a self-destructive personality with a restless, wounded ego that needs to find the peace of understanding how it came to be in its present state of confusion.’
• ‘Crataegus Ø + Rose Quartz 30C + Emerald 30C: This has been shown to be a very useful support remedy in angina and other heart conditions that cause the patient to feel weak and battered. (The dosage should be at the practitioner’s discretion.)’
• ‘Holly Berry + Sandalwood + Emerald 30C: to be taken as a protective and supportive remedy… such a deep impression of grief unwittingly visited on an innocent child.’
• ‘Mnium Hornum + Amyl Nitrate + Emerald in low potency [e.g. 3X]: In high blood pressure where there is need for support of the tissues of the heart.’
[Note: This combination is proving very useful in a case of mine that had not responded very well to the typical Banerji Protocols for high blood pressure.]
• And, as noted earlier, here’s another useful combination that employs Emerald: Radiation Combination (Guild) from Helios: Emerald, Plutonium Nitricum, Radium Bromatum., Rainbow, Rose Quartz, Yellow. (I have used the 30C happily.)
Some Other Notes About Emerald
- Emerald, it is an ‘ego healer’; New grief remedy; Exhaustion following trauma; The urgent need to let go; Resentment and bitterness from deep in the past; unable to forgive. This is especially true for those who have not properly resolved their relationships with parents.; Clings to bitter memories; Addictive behaviour; excessive behavioral habits. Finds it hard to discriminate when there is an element of temptation. Hard to sustain self- discipline.
“Can be used in the same way that Hahnemann used Sulphur: to open a case, especially one that seems closed and repressed, and where the ego is damaged and reluctant to shift out of the comfort zone so carefully nurtured despite obvious fearfulness that ‘something is just not right’.” - Colin Griffith
- Loss of stability in those who are not fully in their bodies; lack of grounding. Frustrated by their own limitations which they do not know how to stretch. Lack of self-confidence; a feeling of inadequacy. Fear of the future; anxieties about ability to cope. Has to find ways to compensate for feeling easily overwhelmed.
- Injuries to the head and spine which remain unresolved (despite other indicated remedies). Arthritic changes; painful joints.
- Drying out of the system: hot, burning and itching on the skin with a variety of eruptions: eczema, spots, recurrent abscesses.
- Facilitates Easy Birth
- Cases that seem beyond redemption.
- Emerald and other green crystal remedies are exceptionally good at calming an agitated system.
- The precious stone, emerald, is the mineral analogue of Green. Emerald is higher frequency than green.
- Emerald bears repetition well.
- Works almost immediately.
- Supports all constitutions and miasms.
You might also compare Golden Beryl, Peridot, and Green, which are other new remedies that can be found in the New Materia Medica volumes.
Please read Emerald on your own to discover much more, including head, heart, digestion, joints, female issues, and many additional mentals.
Ordering and Dosing Emerald—
We don’t have clinically tested ‘protocols’ with these new remedies. So we have to learn through direct practice and the experiences of others.
Some ways that Emerald has been employed:
-200C once a week, or before and after extraction surgery
-30C once or twice a day
-Also see the combination suggestions above.
‘I love using Emerald. I nearly always prescribe it in the 200 once per week for troubled people where there are heart (emotional) issues. They can’t relax the heart chakra. They often have hunched up shoulders and shoulder symptoms. The Emerald makes them drop their shoulders; it opens the heart. They often ask for more… JO - from the New Materia Medica
The meditative proving of Emerald was undertaken using Emerald 30C made from the triturated natural crystal.
If ordering from Helios, there are two options. This is the Guild Emerald, and is the one I would choose.
There is only one Emerald listed in the Vitalis rates. (And many have been using it with equal success.)
A final note about Emerald and the ‘new’ remedies in general.
Although some of the new homeopathic remedies, like Emerald, seem to bear daily repetition well, in general these new remedies are often found to be much more deep acting than many of the remedies we are used to.
And in many cases they cannot be used over and over without aggravations.
What I am finding is that these new homeopathic remedies seem to act much more like we read about in the old literature; such as how they practiced in the days of Hahnemann, James Compton Burnett, and Dorothy Shepherd.
I have a couple of theories about this:
One is based in the fact that chronic tinkering, toxicity and exposures have created so many layers of complexity, that the original model of one remedy and wait just can’t ‘get us there’ anymore. (You can read my theory on this, with case experiences, in the article, Mrs. G.)
My second theory has to do with the centuries of use of some of our remedies, and my observation that these most commonly used homeopathic medicines often now require much higher potencies, or more frequent dosing, to achieve action similar to what was achieved in the past. It seems the homeopathic medicines that humanity has been using a lot of for a long time are requiring more repetition or much higher potencies.
Whereas, a 30C in these ‘new remedies’ might act as quickly or deeply as a 10M in the ‘old remedies’. It’s as if they are still fresh to the human collective.

I'm still taking Emerald 30C twice daily. Hearing effects have leveled off and have not noticed an improvement in eyesight.
Another information masterpiece! Thank you.
